Is medical cannabis treatment legal in Brazil?
Yes. The medical use of cannabis-based products is regulated by Anvisa, Brazil's health regulatory agency, and is permitted with a medical prescription. The main ways to access these products are buying them at pharmacies (RDC 327/2019), importing them as an individual (RDC 660/2022) and through patient associations. Without a prescription, use is not covered by health regulations.
Do I need authorization from Anvisa to use it?
It depends on the route you choose. To import the product, you need to register with Anvisa through the gov.br portal, using your medical prescription. To buy it at a pharmacy, all you need is the prescription along with the special prescription form (notificação de receita) required for that product. During your consultation, you'll be guided through the steps that apply to your case.
Can I travel with the product?
When traveling within Brazil, it's best to carry the product in its original packaging, together with your prescription and your proof of purchase or import authorization document. For international travel, the rules vary a great deal from country to country and should be checked well in advance.
Can the treatment cause a positive result on drug tests or anti-doping tests?
Products that contain THC, including full-spectrum products with small amounts, can lead to a positive result on drug tests, such as those required for some categories of Brazilian driver's license (CNH). In sports, THC is banned in competition, while isolated CBD is not on the World Anti-Doping Agency's prohibited list; even so, CBD products may contain traces of THC. If this matters to you, mention it during your consultation: the choice of product takes it into account.
How soon will I notice the effects?
It varies from person to person and from condition to condition. Some people notice changes in the first few days; for others, the response appears over several weeks, as the dose is gradually adjusted. That's why the treatment is assessed through ongoing follow-up, and the Wellbeing Diary helps a lot with this process.
Will I need to stop the medications I already take?
Not on your own. In most cases, medical cannabis is added as a complement to your current treatment. If, during follow-up, it makes sense to reduce a medication, this is done gradually and with a plan, ideally together with the doctor who prescribed it.
How long will I need to use it?
There is no single timeframe. It depends on the condition being treated, how you respond and your goals. The treatment is reviewed regularly at follow-up visits, and the dose may be adjusted, maintained or reduced depending on how things progress.
How is the product taken? Is it smoked?
No. Medical treatment uses products with a known dose, such as oils (drops under the tongue), capsules and sprays, and in some cases topical formulations. Smoking is not a recommended form of treatment.
Can children receive this treatment?
In specific situations, such as some forms of treatment-resistant epilepsy and symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), medical cannabis may be considered, with careful assessment, consent from parents or guardians and, ideally, joint follow-up with the child's pediatrician or pediatric neurologist. To ask about care for children, contact the team on WhatsApp.
Can older adults use it?
Yes, with some extra care. Older adults tend to be more sensitive to drowsiness and dizziness, which increases the risk of falls, and they often take several medications at the same time. That's why the starting dose is usually even lower and adjustments are more gradual.
What are the most common side effects?
The most commonly reported are drowsiness, dry mouth, changes in appetite, diarrhea and dizziness. With THC, a faster heart rate can also occur and, at higher doses, anxiety or changes in perception. In most cases, these effects are mild and improve by adjusting the dose or the time it's taken.
Does medical cannabis interact with other medications?
Yes. CBD can change the way the liver processes a number of medications, such as some anticonvulsants, blood thinners, antidepressants and sedatives. That's why it's essential to tell the doctor during your consultation about all the medications, supplements and herbal remedies you take.
Is medical cannabis addictive?
CBD has a low potential for dependence, according to international assessments. THC has some potential for problematic use, but in a medical setting (with low doses, a defined therapeutic goal and regular follow-up), this risk is closely monitored. Your history is taken into account when choosing the product.
Can I drive during treatment?
Products containing THC can affect attention and reflexes, and CBD can cause drowsiness. Avoid driving or operating machinery at the start of treatment and after dose increases, until you know how you respond, and never drive if you feel drowsy or dizzy. Specific guidance is given during your consultation.
Can I use it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
Use is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, because there are no studies showing that it is safe for the baby. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy, talk about it during your consultation.
Are online consultations available to patients anywhere in Brazil?
Yes. Telehealth is regulated in Brazil by Lei 14.510/2022 (Brazil's telehealth law) and by the rules of the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM), and online consultations can be held with patients in different states, with the same care and depth as an in-person visit.
How do I receive my prescription? Is it digital?
Whenever the regulations allow, the prescription is issued in digital format with an electronic signature. Some products require a specific prescription form, with its own rules for how it is issued and delivered. During your consultation, you'll be told how your prescription will reach you.
What should I bring to my first consultation?
Recent test results and medical reports, a list of the medications you take (with doses and times) and notes about your symptoms and goals. If you use the website's Wellbeing Diary, that helps a lot too.
How does follow-up work after the first consultation?
Treatment is adjusted gradually, and follow-up visits are used to assess your response, any side effects and whether changes are needed. The interval between visits is agreed on with you. For quick questions between visits, you can reach the team on WhatsApp. The details are on the How it works page.
Is my information kept confidential?
Yes. All care follows medical confidentiality and the LGPD, Brazil's data protection law (Lei 13.709/2018). Health information is sensitive data and is used only for your care. Learn more in our Privacy Policy.
How much does a consultation cost?
Fees and payment methods are described on the How it works page. If you have any questions, the team can answer them on WhatsApp.
Does health insurance cover the consultation?
Consultations are private (not billed directly to health insurance). You receive a receipt for the consultation, which you can use to request reimbursement from your health plan, according to the terms of your policy.
How much does the cannabis-based product cost?
The cost varies widely depending on the type of product, its concentration, how it is obtained (pharmacy, importation or patient association) and the dose needed. During your consultation, the options are presented transparently, taking your budget into account as well.
What is the cancellation policy?
Unexpected things happen. With at least 24 hours' notice, your consultation can be rescheduled at no cost. The full cancellation and refund terms are on the How it works page.
