What it is

Chronic pain is pain that lasts more than three months. It can be nociceptive (linked to inflammation or wear, as in osteoarthritis), neuropathic (caused by nerve damage or dysfunction, with burning, shooting or tingling sensations) or mixed. Over time, pain often affects sleep, mood and energy too, creating a cycle that's hard to break.

How medical cannabis may be considered

Cannabinoids act on nervous system pathways involved in how we perceive pain and may help some people reduce pain intensity and improve their sleep and day-to-day functioning. They are usually part of a broader plan, which may include other medications, physical therapy and changes to daily routine.

What treatment aims for

  • Bring pain down to a level that makes daily life easier.
  • Improve sleep and function: walking, working, spending time with others.
  • Where possible, reduce the need for other painkillers, always with medical guidance.

Important precautions

  • Cannabis works best as part of a plan that also includes physiotherapy and guided physical activity.
  • At first, watch for drowsiness and dizziness, especially if you already take other medications that make you sleepy.
  • Don't stop opioids or other painkillers on your own.

Common questions

Does cannabis work for every kind of pain?
Not necessarily. Studies show more consistent results for neuropathic pain, and the response varies a lot from person to person. That's why the assessment is individual and treatment starts at low doses.
Will I have to stop my current medications?
No. Cannabis usually becomes one part of the plan. If there's room to reduce a medication over time, that happens gradually and with follow-up.
