Parkinson's disease: non-motor symptoms

Symptoms beyond tremor and stiffness, such as pain, sleep problems, anxiety and restlessness, which can greatly affect quality of life.

Emerging evidence

What it is

Parkinson's disease is known for its motor symptoms, such as tremor, stiffness and slowness. But non-motor symptoms, such as pain, poor sleep, anxiety, constipation and mood changes, often affect quality of life just as much, or more.

How medical cannabis may be considered

Medical cannabis has been studied as a complement for some non-motor symptoms, without replacing the main neurological treatment. It is introduced carefully, especially in older adults, because of the risk of drowsiness and dizziness.

What treatment aims for

  • Ease non-motor symptoms such as pain, poor sleep and anxiety.
  • Improve wellbeing without getting in the way of core neurological treatment.
  • Support the person and their caregiver in daily life.

Important precautions

  • Cannabis doesn't replace levodopa or other Parkinson's medications.
  • In older adults, take extra care with dizziness, low blood pressure and the risk of falls.
  • Behavior changes or confusion should be reported to the team.

Common questions

Does cannabis help with tremor?
Studies so far haven't shown consistent benefit for motor symptoms such as tremor. The main interest is in non-motor symptoms, and even there the evidence is still early.
Can it be used with levodopa?
Generally, yes, but always with a review of interactions and gradual introduction, together with the neurologist.
